Seniors in Ridgewood were treated to a specially prepared meal on behalf of Citymeals on Wheels, a nonprofit organization that delivers meals to more than 18,000 homebound seniors on weekends, holidays and during emergencies.
On Wednesday, Franco Barrio, a chef at Bespoke Kitchen, prepared 100 meals of braised short ribs, purple potatoes, heirloom carrots, caramelized cipollini onions and orzo salad for the elderly in Ridgewood, Astoria and other neighborhoods in Manhattan.
Last week, chef Shaun Hergatt from the restaurant Juni also prepared 100 meals of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, braised carrots and gravy for seniors in the city.
“With Valentine’s Day on Sunday, many of our meal recipients who have outlived family and friends are feeling even more isolated and alone,” noted Citymeals Executive Director Beth Shapiro. “This month Citymeals was able to spread some extra love with the help of Chefs Barrio and Hergatt who graciously prepared these special meals that were delivered straight to the doors of our vulnerable neighbors who need it the most.”
